Template talk:Infobox NPC
I was thinking - for NPC's could should we have 2 new lines of info
Outfit Class (citizen, barbarian, hunter, misc etc)
And Addon (hat, backpack, turban, sabre etc)?
I was thinking about this earlier, but I think it is better to leave this info off. There are a relatively small number of NPCs that you can get the outfits and addons from, so I think it will just end up being unneccessary clutter on all of the other npc's pages.
I think that the outfits page, and the quest pages for the outfits has (or will have) all of this information. Maybe it would be best to just put a link in the notes section for the npcs that offer these.

NPC template with or without image
I have created template for NPCs in which you can write to show of not the image. Moreover, if it's impossible to upload image with needed name, you can write other name and upload image with new one. If you like that template, you can found it TibiaWiki:Playground/Infobox NPC

Multiple jobs suggestion
The current template does not allow a NPC to have multiple jobs, as you can see on Equipment Shopkeeper & Banker NPCs / Raffael. This could easily be fixed by changing the occupation thing:
- {{if|test={}|then={job}|else=Unknown}}
to:
- {{#if: {{#explode:{}|,|0}}|,|0}} NPCs|{{#explode:{job}|,|0}}{{#if: {{#explode:{job}|,|1}}|, ,|1}} NPCs|{{#explode:{job}|,|1}}}}{{#if: {{#explode:{job}|,|2}}|, ,|2}} NPCs|{{#explode:{job}|,|2}}}}|Unknown}}
This would allow for multiple professions/jobs (up to 3 using the above, but easily expandable). Professions should be seperated by a komma "," and the above code will change it correctly.
To take Raffael as example; "Equipment Shopkeeper & Banker NPCs" should be changed to "Equipment Shopkeeper, Banker".
The above code would change it into:
- Equipment Shopkeeper, Banker
- (Equipment Shopkeeper, Banker.
Easy as that. It wont break the current template, and will add "Unknown" if the paramater isn't set.
Addition
This would "break" the listing, however. Template:Infobox NPC/List would require a change too:
- {{#ifeq:{}||Unknown Occupation|{job}}}
into:
- {{#if: {{#explode:{}|,|0}}|,|0}} NPCs|{{#explode:{job}|,|0}}{{#if: {{#explode:{job}|,|1}}|, ,|1}} NPCs|{{#explode:{job}|,|1}}}}{{#if: {{#explode:{job}|,|2}}|, ,|2}} NPCs|{{#explode:{job}|,|2}}}}|Unknown Occupation}}
End Addition
Didn't want to explode NPC's so I did it another way! -- Sixorish 17:25, 17 August 2008 (UTC)
Categories
A lot of the Wanted Categories are those from "<job> NPCs", e.g. "Guard NPCs". Instead of making all those little categories, it might be better to disable this in the template. Or are those categories needed? ^^ Bennie (talk ~ fellows) ^^ 15:10, 9 March 2009 (UTC)
Categories are suppose to be a navigational aid, so they can be removed unless they will help a user find his way around.
There are no limits to the amount of categories we can have, though. -- Sixorish 15:20, 9 March 2009 (UTC)
You think users use red-linked categories to navigate? I don't, I would not at least. Maybe keep them to see what will develop. ^^ Bennie (talk ~ fellows) ^^ 15:45, 9 March 2009 (UTC)
They won't be dead links forever, the point is to make it more user-friendly, and that won't happen in the blink of an eye. If a user wanted to find the NPCs of a certain profession, they would have to search through a category of 500+ articles to find them. It may even help editors in the case where users add an NPC but don't edit the article listing it, the differences in numbers will make it much easier to update the lists.
We have articles listing small categories of NPCs, so I can't quite see what's wrong with a category for the same lists. -- Sixorish 16:03, 9 March 2009 (UTC)
Header
Which is the best header?
According to Template:Infobox NPC and Template:Infobox NPC/Documentation, the first header used on NPC articles was: {{Infobox_NPC{{if|test={}|then=/{}}}|GetValue={} that was replaced by {{Infobox_NPC{{#if:{}|/{}}}|{} that was replaced by {{Infobox_NPC|List={}|GetValue={}, but some NPC articles use {{Infobox_NPC<includeonly>/{}</includeonly>.
Today I followed the current Template:Infobox NPC/Documentation and replaced headers of some articles by {{Infobox_NPC|List={}|GetValue={} and it messed up the pages that were listing such NPCs via Template:Infobox NPC/List, then I chaged the header back to {{Infobox_NPC<includeonly>/{}</includeonly> and the "bug" was fixed.
I hope you understand what I mean.

I guess, use the one which works best? Wasn't it changed to work with DPL? ^^ Bennie (talk ~ fellows) ^^ 10:06, February 19, 2010 (UTC)
{{Infobox_NPC|List={}|GetValue={}Works best for DPL or so I recall.

I just changed the header in this documentation. I don't see any problem in using {{Infobox_NPC<includeonly>/{}</includeonly>. The only thing I know is if a NPC article is not using this header, its city's NPCs list (and probably other NPCs lists) won't work appropriately.
<·> Hunter of Dragoes <·> My Talk <·> My Contributions <·> 22:17, February 21, 2010 (UTC)
I think we want to change them to use this format though. We can have support for both, the only difference being that |List={} will add support DPL. -- Sixorish 23:37, February 21, 2010 (UTC)
Allusions link?
This is something along the same vein as the transcripts page, but does anyone think it might be nice or helpful if something like

existed for this template? I don't know if it's possible using the # with page links because every page would exist, but the allusions page is in need of a redesign anyway. If it could work, I think it would be a good addition to the NPC page as it easily links NPCs to their possible allusions and nearly every allusion about each NPC is already in the proper format, so the content would be there quickly. Kharzad Ironfist 00:07, March 25, 2010 (UTC)
- Solid idea alas that specific way doesn't work. For the moment I don't have any good ideas for how to make it work, but I do like your idea.

It's good, but impractical. The only way we could do this in a server-side manner at present is by devoting a page to each NPC e.g. Template:Allusions/Frodo. -- Sixorish 00:22, March 25, 2010 (UTC)
Ah, well. Maybe there'll be a way in the future. Kharzad Ironfist 01:12, March 25, 2010 (UTC)
- Could be done if each bit had it's own template, thats just as much work as Template:Allusions/Frodo

Flavourtext
Flavourtext has never been supported by NPC template as far as I know ... why do we need this? I have seen it on a few NPC pages as well but it never had any function to my knowledge. Do NPCs need flavortext? -- Sixorish (talk) 22:50, July 8, 2012 (UTC)
- I added it to be in-keeping with wiki standards, slight futurproofing aswell, as it has no role until its actually entered as something.
Top right
I don't like this message:
- You can barter with this NPC.
A few reasons:
- It intends to say "you can trade with this NPC". It would be more coherent to say just that.
- Barter actually means: "Exchange (goods or services) for other goods or services without using money." But it is used as its exact opposite.
- If a person wanted to know if the NPC traded items, they could scroll down like 300 pixels at most to find the actual list.
- I like this top-right feature on item pages because it shows information not related to the item itself, but our classification of it on TibiaWiki. For example, Tibia doesn't actually have these classes "Household Items" that is our classification. This directly says "you can trade with this NPC" which pertains to the game.
-- Sixorish (talk) 23:07, July 8, 2012 (UTC)
- You're dead right, I just couldn't think of much better. Should we do "This NPC is a *JOB* and lives in *Location*"?
Craggles ಠ_ಠ Talk ∙ Contribs 06:29, July 9, 2012 (UTC)
- Bit of a bombshell when I realised when none of the npc lists run on dpl. We probably need a City parameter, don't you think?
Craggles ಠ_ಠ Talk ∙ Contribs 06:42, July 9, 2012 (UTC)
I don't think there's any need at all to write anything there. All of the information is presented in the template right now. -- Sixorish (talk) 07:28, July 9, 2012 (UTC)
- Good point. It'd be nice if all infoboxes had a top right. That's just me "over standardizing" I guess.

Changes
I created the draft User:Sixorish/Sam page that I would like to see adopted for all templates. The main changes are:
- No misused tables. Tables are not designed to layout pages. You can find a collection of information on Google about why we shouldn't use tables for layout.
- Items traded is centered. The text seems misplaced if we have multiple columns.
- We gain more vertical space because the current scales width according to %. Comparing Sam and User:Sixorish/Sam we gain 106 pixels in vertical space on my browser.
- Because of the gained vertical space, the trades tables are much better displayed on the Wikia skin. at low resolutions.
I tested it in IE and Firefox, it seems ok at multiple resolutions. -- Sixorish (talk) 00:05, July 10, 2012 (UTC)
I really like this but sadly usually is a circus to get cross browser compatibility without tables, current opera, IE 8 and all browsers available for now on Adobe BrowserLab are working for me, only problem is IE 6(picture below), regular Sam displays more or less correctly on IE 6.
http://i49.tinypic.com/2eam7v6.jpg
On how to solve this, "display:inline-block;" doesn't work with divs on IE 6. I'm not sure if this can be solved with absolute positioned divs, I will test with IE 6 tomorrow. Maybe we can investigate how many IE 6 users we have on tibiawiki and just ignore this problem.
Note that to test on browserlab you need an adobe account and replace : for %3A in the url

- The update information may well seep into the create image if the image and name are pushed all the way to the top like they are in your incarnation of infobox npc.
Craggles ಠ_ಠ Talk ∙ Contribs 11:09, July 10, 2012 (UTC)
I think IE <= 6 support should be dropped. CipSoft doesn't even support Windows 2000 which is the only reason to be using IE6 (right?). And I think that's been fixed Craggles. -- Sixorish (talk) 04:51, July 20, 2012 (UTC)
Drop job in favor of category
The truth is, we don't use "job" for things that would likely be called a job in the real world. I think what we really mean is category. Noodles is a dog, a pet, a royal figure, these are categories, not jobs. I propose that we change jobx to categoryx, or use a comma-separated list (Dog, Pet, Royal Figure). What do you guys think? -- Sixorish (talk) 16:07, January 4, 2014 (UTC)
What you say is true for Noodles, but a lot of NPCs respond very specific to the keyword job, saying they are a hunter or a priest or something else which very much resembles a real life job. Maybe we should add an option to say "this NPC has no specific job, it is just a dog of the king" and then give it a category instead? -- Bennie (talk ~ fellows) 16:13, January 4, 2014 (UTC)
But priests are also categories, so it would just be a more encompassing list. Also Elvith for example is an Elf, a (Music) Shopkeeper, probably a Musician, ... it would be almost the same thing except Elf is not a job, so people cannot search for Elf NPCs. -- Sixorish (talk) 17:07, January 4, 2014 (UTC)
Hyperlinking occupations
Could someone with knowledge of coding make sure that the occupations put in after the job (and job2, job3, etc.) parameter automatically links to the proper occupation page (as was the case with the previous template)? -- Wouterboy (talk) 15:12, February 17, 2015 (UTC)
It's tricky with the inline list :S -- Bennie (talk ~ fellows) 15:50, February 17, 2015 (UTC)
Done. -- Sixorish (talk) 02:38, February 18, 2015 (UTC)
Ahh, beautiful. Thanks Six! -- Wouterboy (talk) 15:30, February 18, 2015 (UTC)
Ghosts
Should we really treat Ghost NPCs as their own race? Makes little sense in my opinion, especially considering some Ghost NPCs are clearly Humans (A Ghostly Woman, A Ghostly Knight, etc.). The same goes for Shearton Softbeard for example, who is a Dwarf. -- Wouterboy (talk) 12:23, February 19, 2015 (UTC)
You mean they are still human, being a ghost is just a condition (like: alive, dead, ghost)? I don't know, we can just make these definitions up as we add them. I don't have a very strong opinion about this. -- Bennie (talk ~ fellows) 13:03, February 19, 2015 (UTC)
Yes. No NPC can be of two different races, and since we have already established that e.g. Humans and Dwarves are obviously races, Ghosts shouldn't be a race. -- Wouterboy (talk) 13:43, February 19, 2015 (UTC)
Selling Liquids
I applied a standard for NPCs who sell Fluid Containers with liquids. All of them should be listing the liquid in the Sells table and mentioning the container in a note below the table.
If someone disagrees, please present your arguments.
This might be added to this template's documentation later.

Buys/Sells
Replace "Buys/Sells" column with the actual items that they buy or sell
Some NPCs have very large trade lists, so this is impractical. -- Sixorish (talk) 10:21, August 14, 2015 (UTC)
History
Wouldn't it look better/wouldn't it be more logical if the history heading appeared at the end of the regular page, i.e. between buy/sell and transcripts? -- Wouterboy (talk) 11:03, August 24, 2016 (UTC)
it would be more logical, but in my opinion it wouldn't look better because the buy/sell thing is 2 columns and thus you would get: 1 column, then 2 columns, then 1 column of content. But I'm not religiously fanatic about this, you can change it back if you want. -- Bennie (talk ~ fellows) 11:10, August 24, 2016 (UTC)
True. I was worried that the users would be annoyed by having a piece of information 'irrelevant' to their endeavours be presented before something 'relevant' like trading lists, but the consequences of my proposal are more negative still. Combine it with e.g. Yasir and no one would even know of his history section if he ever gets one, considering his huge buy list. Moreover, history sections are very small to begin with, so it really can't be all that inconvenient. You made the right decision. -- Wouterboy (talk) 13:04, August 24, 2016 (UTC)
