You can only upgrade one year after getting the basic Dark Percht Sleigh. Upgrading to the Variant mount has no benefit other than receiving a new mount with a slightly different visual, however, this is necessary for the finished improvement of the mount.
Upgrading the mount is only possible when the Winterlight Solstice event is active.
